What Is Comfort Care?
We offer a range of orthodontic treatment plans for patients of all ages, which is why we also offer comfort dental care and orthodontics to our patients who are experiencing pain or discomfort. The most common causes of discomfort for orthodontic patients include loose brackets or bands, wire irritation, and lost separators. Some of these issues require professional comfort dental care—which is where we can help!
What Should You Do in Case of Discomfort?
Call our office immediately for advice if a bracket or wire is loosened. The bracket may need to be re-fitted as soon as possible. You may have a situation that requires cutting a wire or sliding a bracket off a wire at night or over the weekend. If you need to cut a wire in case of emergency, you may use fingernail clippers that have been washed and sterilized in alcohol. Please call our office the next business day, so that we may schedule an appointment for you.
- Loose Brackets or Bands – You should contact us as soon as possible if you discover a loose bracket or wire in your mouth, as this may require a professional re-fitting. If this happens at night or over the weekend, you can use fingernail clippers that have been washed and sterilized in alcohol to carefully cut a wire in case of emergency. Contact us as soon as you can the following business day to set up an appointment.
- Wire Irritation – Irritation can be a common concern for patients wearing metal braces, due to wires putting pressure on the soft tissue in the mouth. You may be able to use a cotton swab or eraser to carefully move the wire away from the irritated area. If that does not work, you can use a small amount of cotton or wax to cover the end of the wire so it does not irritate your soft tissue. You can also use fingernail clippers that have been washed and sterilized in alcohol to carefully cut part of the wire off. Be sure to contact our office if you cut off part of the wire or if you can’t find relief.
- Lost Separators – If separators—also known as spacers—are part of your orthodontic treatment, it’s important to be careful with brushing, flossing, and eating to avoid dislodging them from your teeth. If any of the separators fall out, contact our office as soon as possible so we can determine if they need to be replaced.
