Orthodontics & Braces FAQ

Before getting braces or orthodontics, having all the facts is important. While there isn’t an Orthodontics 101 class you can take, you can explore braces and orthodontic treatment FAQs for answers. At Central Florida Orthodontic Specialists, we value customer education and are happy to offer expert advice and recommendations. We specialize in orthodontic treatment, including Invisalign and ceramic braces for teens and young adults. Read through some of the most frequently asked orthodontic braces questions in Orlando, FL, and then call us if you have a question that isn’t answered here.

Does my family dentist need to refer me to an orthodontist for treatment?

Many dental insurance plans do not require that you get a referral to an orthodontist if you think you or your child needs braces. If your family dentist does make a referral, you are not required to use that orthodontist. However, your family dentist and orthodontist should work together on a collaborative care plan that maintains the health and beauty of your smile.

At what age should I schedule an appointment for an orthodontic screening?

You should schedule an orthodontic screening by age 7. Getting orthodontic treatment before your child’s permanent teeth come in may make treatment less complicated and less expensive.

Will my teeth straighten out as they grow?

No, permanent teeth will not straighten out on your own. If you or your child has crooked or misaligned teeth, braces or dental aligners are the only treatment to straighten teeth.

How do I schedule an appointment for an initial exam?

You can call one of our three convenient Florida locations in Orlando, Melbourne, or Rockledge to schedule an appointment. You can also fill out the contact form on our website to request a free initial consultation.

What will happen at the initial examination appointment?

At your first visit, we will have you fill out some forms, and we will give you a tour of our office and go over our services. We will give you a thorough orthodontic exam and take orthodontic x-rays. We will then review our results and findings and offer professional recommendations for treatment options.

What will I learn from the initial examination?

If you decide to proceed with treatment, we will conduct a more in-depth treatment consultation and clinical diagnosis with a written summary of our findings. This summary will explain your recommended treatment, treatment goals, and an estimate of the fees and costs for orthodontic treatment. We can also answer any questions you have.

How long will it take to complete treatment?

The length of your treatment will depend on the extent of the issues we are treating, as well as your age and your cooperation with the treatment protocol. We will give you an estimate of your treatment length, and we will provide updates as your treatment progresses, and we will evaluate how it is proceeding. In general, your first phase of treatment may last between 12-14 months. Your second phase may last between 18-36 months.

How much will braces cost? Are financing options available? How does my insurance work?

The cost of your braces will depend on the extent of the treatment you need and the length of your treatment plan. We accept most major insurance plans as well as CareCredit. We also offer monthly payment plans and a discount for cash payments, with no down payment required. Your initial consultation is free, and our goal is to make your orthodontic treatment as affordable as possible.

How often will I have appointments?

You should come in for an evaluation and check-up every 6-8 weeks; however, we encourage you to schedule an appointment at any time if you are experiencing any discomfort or concerns.

Do braces hurt?

Orthodontic treatment is much more advanced and sophisticated now than it was 10 or 20 years ago. We stay on top of the latest advancements and research in the industry to ensure our patients are comfortable throughout their treatment. We want our patients to be comfortable and at ease working with our dental specialists, so we offer Comfort Care for dental care and orthodontics. Don’t let dental discomfort cause pain or stress. Our team can assess the problem and find a solution for you.

Can I return to school the day I receive my braces?

Yes, in most cases, you can return to school the day you receive your braces. You can take an over-the-counter pain reliever if you are experiencing any soreness or discomfort.

Can I still play sports?

Yes, in most cases, you can still play sports even while undergoing orthodontic treatment. We recommend wearing a mouthguard to protect your teeth and braces, especially if you play contact sports.

Is it too late to have braces if I am already an adult?

No, it is not too late for braces as an adult. As long as you have healthy gums and bone to support your teeth, you can get orthodontic treatment at any age. We specialize in adult braces and clear aligners.

Can I wear braces even though I have crowns and missing teeth?

Yes, if you have missing teeth, we recommend orthodontic intervention. Otherwise, your remaining teeth will begin to drift into the empty spaces, causing misalignment and malocclusion. Orthodontic treatment will protect your teeth and prevent further damage so that your cosmetic dentist can replace your missing teeth.

Why should I choose an orthodontic specialist?

An orthodontic specialist undergoes years of education and training to provide personalized orthodontic treatment to children, teens, and/or adults. While some family dentists may offer orthodontic care, their range of services and spectrum of care may not be as advanced or sophisticated.
